Exploring Careers: Inspiring the Next Generation of Surveyors

Recently, I had the privilege of attending a speed networking event at Fulham Boys School, and invitation extended by the RICS Inspire Ambassador Scheme. This initiative was so good, designed to give young minds an opportunity to engage with professionals from various fields and learn about different career paths. As a Chartered Surveyor, I found this event epic, given the challenges our industry faces in attracting young talent.

As I expected , most of them had little to no understanding of what a Chartered Surveyor does

During the event, I spent time with a group of bright, curious students (so polite). As I expected , most of them had little to no understanding of what a Chartered Surveyor does. This shines a light on a crucial gap—while professions like accounting and law are widely recognise the role of a surveyor remains largely misunderstood. The event just stressed to me that we need to introduce more young people to our field and spark their interest in surveying.

I left the event feeling motivated to take more action and to encourage you to do the same. I believe that schools play a pivotal role in shaping young minds and exposing them to diverse career opportunities. Therefore, I urge parents to advocate for events like the one I attended. By encouraging schools to host similar initiatives, we can provide students with invaluable exposure to a wide range of professions, including surveying.

Looking ahead, I am really keen to continue supporting initiatives that promote career exploration among young people from all backgrounds. If you have any ideas or suggestions on how we can further engage with schools and communities to promote awareness about surveying and other lesser-known professions, I would love to hear from you. For sure, we can inspire these young people !

If you have thoughts or suggestions on how to expand this initiative or other ideas to engage young people in career exploration, please reach out. Let's #BeNeighbourly about it and allocate some time to make and be an impact.

P.S  was secretly hoping that I would get some of that (old) school sponge cake with icing dessert’ you know the square one with custard.
